MOBILE INSTALLATION AND RESISTANCE BOARD WEIRS IN TOMMARPSÅN

On behalf of the County Administrative Board of Skåne, we installed our fish counter, TiVA FC, in Tommarpsån to monitor fish migration. At this location, there was no fixed structure available for mounting the fish counter, so we utilized our mobile fish counter tower along with a resistance board weirs solution to guide the fish through the fish counter.

FISH COUNTER TOWER
The fish counter tower we offer is made of stainless steel and has a wide base with four adjustable feet to be placed in a watercourse even if the bottom is not entirely level. The tower is 2 meters high and is suitable for watercourses with a depth of up to approximately 1.2 meters. The tower also features a winch for hoisting the counter out of the water for easy cleaning and maintenance. Additionally, the tower has multiple attachment points to secure devices like resistance board weirs.

RESISTANCE BOARD WEIRS
The design is a variation of a so-called “resistance board weirs”. They consist of a tube structure attached to the bottom of the watercourse. The grate itself comprises air-filled UV-resistant tubes, allowing it to float on its own. The key feature is the adjustable vane behind the tubes, which is lifted above the surface with the water’s pressure, preventing fish from swimming past the grate. When the grate get clogged, for example with leaves, it collects at the top of the grate and can be easily removed. If the vane is properly adjusted, the bars can even be self-cleaning. This functionality also allows canoes and kayaks to pass without issues, even if a large log were to come along.

FISH MONITORING IN HYDROPOWER PROJECT​

At the Finsjö Upper Power Plant in Emån, a new type of turbine was installed in the autumn of 2023. It is called an Archimedean screw turbine, with the idea that fish can safely pass through the screw both upstream and downstream. This screw turbine is the first of its kind to be installed in Sweden and will be thoroughly monitored by Karlstad University over a five-year period.

FOLLOW-UP WITH FISH COUNTERS
TiVA was commissioned to deliver no less than three fish counters and an underwater camera as crucial tools in the follow-up work. The fish counters are also equipped with integrated antennas capable of reading so-called PIT tags. This technology is similar to how regular contactless payment cards work; the antenna mounted on the fish counter generates a magnetic field, providing power to the small passive transmitter implanted in the fish as it swims through the antenna. When activated by the magnetic field, the transmitter sends out its unique ID number, which is captured by a reader connected to the antenna.

This technology creates entirely unique opportunities when combined with a fish counter. A common approach is to capture, for instance, trout fry via electrofishing in their spawning areas and tag the fish with the transmitter. When the fish then pass by the antennas, the ID number is captured along with data such as the time, size of the fish, as well as images and video footage. Because the transmitter is passive and only activated by the antenna’s magnetic field, the fish can be tracked throughout its entire lifespan. This creates entirely unique conditions for collecting valuable data over time without the need to handle fish through, for example, trap capture.

COMPLETE PIT SYSTEM FOR OUR FISH COUNTERS
In conjunction with the project at Finsjö, we developed the integrated PIT system for our TiVA FC. The antenna itself is attached to one end of the fish counter and only adds approximately 8 cm to its length. The reader, power supply, and control unit are all housed in the fish counter’s equipment cabinet, integrating directly with the fish counting system. This ensures that all registrations from the PIT system are matched with the registrations from the fish counter. All data is then, of course, available together on our web platform. The PIT antenna with a reader is now offered as a valued addition our fish counters.

SOLAR POWERED FISH COUNTER

TiVA’s fish counters and underwater cameras have low energy consumption and can be powered by solar cells and batteries, allowing them to be installed in environments where there is no access to the power grid.

SIMPLE INSTALLATION
We can offer complete packages with solar cells, batteries, and charge regulators. The batteries are delivered in a box where everything is pre-wired and ready to go. All that is needed is to connect the solar cells and batteries to the fish counter. Solar cell stands are not included but can be built on-site in the form of a wooden structure or something similar.

CUSTOMISABLE
The solar panels should be placed in a shade-free, south-facing position, and the panel’s tilt angle should be adjusted according to the periods of the year when the fish counter should be in operation. If the fish counter is intended to operate year-round, the tilt should be relatively steep compared to when the fish counter is only operational in spring, summer, and autumn. We can customize the size and number of batteries and solar panels as needed.
